What is it about?

It would be unusual not to be familiar with Brown’s work nowadays. Dare to Lead is perhaps her most relevant workplace book because it positions her research on vulnerability, shame and guilt into behaviours we might find in the workplace. It is a deep dive into how important honesty and the appropriate actions are to effectively lead people at work.

Why should I read it?

If you are truly looking to be a leader who can engage with others in a very authentic and genuine way then this is the book for you. People who have a high level of empathy or sensory awareness (EQ) will get a lot from reading this book. Likewise, those who do not but wonder what’s missing in their leadership will also enjoy this very refreshing and novel perspective on leadership skills needed in a workplace. Brown talks about very human traits, like letting down our personal armour to really connect with others at work. It takes a brave leader indeed to understand how vulnerability is important at work too.

Is it a challenging read?

It’s an easy read but it’s best read with a high dose of honesty available. The best way to read this book is with an open mind and a pen to take notes in the margins. It’s a wonderful, insightful and educational read written from the heart.
