What is it about?
This is Collins popular book about the key elements required to move an average business to a great business. First published in 2001, it remains a best selling business book today. It has a corporate, large business focus and argues that a seven step process is observed in great companies. These steps range from recruiting a leader who is humble yet focused, through to identifying the single primary competency and just focusing on that. The pinwheel process Collins outlines is a very popular strategic development approach.
Why should I read it?
Good to Great is still cited as a valuable business book read today, even though it is over 20 years old and several of the companies sited as cases in the book no longer exist (update needed!). It's recommended reading as a seminal work in the business book space. Understanding the concepts presented in the book would be ideal to demonstrate learning when planning a corporate career. It's highly recommended reading for C-Suite executives with the caveat regarding companies cited in the book. This itself would make for a great workshop discussion - what went wrong?
