What is it about?
I often read this book when business is causing me to feel stressed or anxious. It’s essentially a book about the value of failure and struggles. Brown talks about how to embrace a fearless life and how to overcome self-doubt. Rising Strong is about the stories we tell ourselves (our negative self-talk) that can keep us afraid of trying, or feeling shame for failing. Anyone who has struggled at work or felt they are simply not good enough will get a lot from reading this book.
Why should I read it?
It is full of ideas and stories that challenge the negative talk we so often have about ourselves. Rising Strong normalises struggles and provides great strategies to overcome them. Section three and four of the book – Owning our Stories and The Reckoning make honesty and vulnerability safe concepts to explore. It’s a great book to help build resilience during tough times at work.
Is it a challenging read?
It’s a very easy read but quite thought provoking. Make sure you have time to digest the ideas and space to reflect on your own actions. Having an opportunity to really focus on the message in the book is well worth the investment.
